What This Is

These resources are to support you in your PBL journey

We will use the growth cycle of the kukui nut as a metaphor to connect the Project Path that guides teachers through each phase of the project. Consider how you want this project to be experienced by your students. Just like the growth cycle of the kukui nut, the ‘Āina Aloha PBL Experience, is cyclical and spirals. Each phase serves as the foundation for the next and is a process of continuous learning.

‘Āina Aloha PBL Experience

The ‘Āina Aloha PBL Experience was designed for teachers in Windward District. ‘Āina Aloha translates into "beloved place" and emphasizes the importance of one‘s relationship with their place, which is grounded in pono and reciprocal relationships. As you plan your PBL project, use our step-by-step form as your guide.

Why is this important?

When designing or refining a project, it‘s helpful to have a framework to capture your ideas and organize your plans. A Gold Standard PBL unit has many pieces to plan: your learning goals for students, entry event, driving question, major product(s) students will create, daily lessons, and more.
As a district doing PBL, it‘s helpful for teachers to use a common framework for PBL unit planning, so teachers can collaborate using the same language and share projects more easily with colleagues.
So our Academic Integration Team created the ‘Āina Aloha Experience which connects the Office of Hawaiian Education‘s (OHE) ‘Āina Aloha Competencies to support you in the planning process.

PBL Module Library

These PBL Modules are aligned to both PBLWorks Gold Standard Framework and HQPBL Framework. These self-paced modules are just in time resources to help you through the most common problems of practice that arise when teachers start implementing PBL. You can complete these modules based on your schedule or as needed. They can be done individually or with a team of teachers.
